About
There’s a question underneath every good brief. Most people don’t ask it out loud, but it’s always there. What does this brand actually need to become?
That question is where MakeShft starts.
Ballio Chan is a creative director and artist based in Berkeley, CA. Over 20+ years he’s led brand and creative at every scale, building campaigns at ESPN, Nike, and Under Armour, heading brand and creative at Automattic across WordPress.com and Jetpack, and running independent engagements for startups and cultural brands building from zero. He’s been the CD in the room and the Head of Brand scaling a team. He knows what both feel like.
MakeShft is the studio he built around that experience. It flexes: solo creative direction for founders who need someone to own the vision, studio muscle for in-house teams that need a senior hand without the agency overhead. The model fits the project, not the other way around.
Running alongside the client work is a generative art practice rooted in code, color, and form. Influences: Ellsworth Kelly’s reduction, Paul Rand’s conviction, Yves Klein’s obsession. The art keeps the practice honest, a reminder that the best design doesn’t decorate, it reveals.
